What is the "free time" for demurrage and detention?

This is the number of days (e.g., 7-14 days) allowed at the destination port to pick up the container and return the empty, free of charge. After this period, daily fees apply.

 

 

 

What are common surcharges?

BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor): Fuel cost adjustment.

CAF (Currency Adjustment Factor): Currency fluctuation adjustment.

PSS (Peak Season Surcharge): Applied during high-demand periods.

THC (Terminal Handling Charge): Charged at origin/destination ports.

Demurrage & Detention: Fees for exceeding free time for container use at the terminal (demurrage) or after pickup (detention).

What does the shipping quote include?

Quotes typically include Ocean Freight, Origin Charges (handling, documentation), and Destination Charges (port fees, delivery). It is crucial to confirm if it's a Port-to-Port or Door-to-Door rate.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL (Full Container Load): You book an entire container for your exclusive cargo.

LCL (Less than Container Load): Your cargo shares a container with shipments from other parties. It's consolidated and deconsolidated at freight stations.

What documents are required for shipping?

Key documents include: Bill of Lading (B/L), Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, and Customs Declaration. Specific requirements vary by country and commodity.

What types of containers are available?

Dry (Standard) Containers, High Cube (HQ/HC) Containers, Refrigerated (Reefer) Containers, Open Top Containers, Flat Rack Containers, Tank Containers, etc.

What is a TEU?

TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. It's a standard unit for measuring cargo capacity, based on the volume of a 20ft container. A 40ft container equals 2 TEU.
